Last week we talked all about how to create a budget, so today, we’re going to talk all about the different ways to keep track of your budget!
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts - sticking to a budget has never been easy for me. One of the main reasons is because I didn’t have the right method figured out.
Some of the most popular methods include (but aren’t limited to):
I love ALL things paper! And these are some great options:
The Happy Planner is a really cool planner system. They have what’s called a Budget Expansion Pack, that you can add into your planner. This is a great option, if you already use a paper planner and want to customize it to include your budget.
The Day Designer has a free “Bill Pay” checklist
There are tons of other options if you search “Printable Budget” on Pinterest!
As I stated, I LOVE PAPER! However, a paper budget just doesn’t work for our lifestyle right now.
A spreadsheet sounds the most appealing to me, when creating a budget. I like it because it’s totally customizable and I can make it as comprehensive as I want. AND I can color coordinate!
- The Budgeting Wife has some awesome spreadsheet templates you can purchase for $5 and use forever!
I created a simple spreadsheet using Google Sheets! They have tons of customizable templates that you can play around with to create your perfect budget.
Cliff and I used a spreadsheet for the first year(ish) of our marriage but ultimately fell off the bandwagon with it. The only reason a spreadsheet is not ideal for us, is that it’s not easy to update and check on the go.
I’m sure there are about 9,000 different budgeting apps out there, so I won’t even try to touch on all of them. But I will mention the Every Dollar app.
The Every Dollar App is a free budgeting app (& they also have a website). I love Every Dollar because it’s easy to use on the go. Cliff and I both have the app on our phone and just use one log in. It updates in real time and is easy to add in different budget items.
*For an annual fee you can link up your bank account and it will bring in all of your transactions - however, this isn’t necessary to get the full use out of the app!*
This is what Cliff and I use and LOVE!
Regardless of which method you choose to record your budget the key is to UTILIZE IT. You could spend hours creating a complex budget, but if YOU don’t work it, then it won’t work for you! So, try out a few different ways to see what best fits your lifestyle and then RUN WITH IT!
What is your favorite budgeting tool?!
