gratitude

grat·i·tude
ˈɡradəˌt(y)o͞od/
noun

  1. the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

I've been thinking about gratitude & thankfulness for the past several months. The importance of being thankful and showing gratitude are two of the best qualities a person can have, in my opinion! Everyone loves being told "thank you" or "I appreciate you", but how often are we the ones doing the telling?

A few months ago, I was at Barnes and Noble. I was perusing the bargain table and came across a book called "A Simple Act of Gratitude: How Learning to Say Thank You Changed My Life" by John Kralik I read the brief synopsis, on the back, and decided to purchase it. Basically, John's life was taking a turn for the worst, he was going through a divorce, his law firm was failing, he was in poor health and he had a distant relationship with his children. It all changed when an ex-girlfriend sent him a thank you note for a Christmas gift, John had given her. He was floored that someone would send him a handwritten note and decided he would start sending out thank you notes as well. I have not finished this book yet, but it has really inspired me! In the book, John decides that he's going to write 365 thank you notes. He created a spreadsheet and tracker who he'd  sent thank you notes to. Loving spreadsheets and organization, like I do, I hoped right on this train!

So, for 2015 I plan to write 365 thank you notes. I too, will keep track of them in a spreadsheet. Imagine that you decide to write just 50 thank you notes, and you keep track of all 50. Then you look back over your list and think about how amazing it'll be when you realize you have 50 different things to be thankful for! How awesome, right?!

Would y'all like to join me?! I know 365 thank you notes may seem kind of crazy - so if that number turns you off to the idea, you can pick any number you'd like! Not a huge handwritting person? Maybe you'd just want to commit to join 20 or 30 thank you notes for the year. Whatever number you pick, is great! I think you'll be surprised at the amount of things you can be thankful for, when you start to think about it! How about that bank teller that always greets you with a smile? Or the older gentleman that always helps you at the grocery store? What about that single mother who selflessly volunteers at church every week? Or the widowed man that always has a smile on his face? I guarantee, when you make a conscious decision to be thankful, you're list will be abounding with thank you note recipients!

So, what do you say? Want to join me in spreading love and gratitude, this year?! If you're still on the fence, just look at this as a way for you to justify buying those cute thank you cards from Target!
